Overcoming Writer’s Block 101

writing-tips memoFirst off, stop making that face. Second, stop making that face at me. You know there is a chance your mug may freeze like that. *Giggle* And you, stop rolling your eyes. Yeah, cookie cakes, you. Believe it or not, I’m not trying to throw you off your game, mess with your mojo or wish you a nasty case of writer’s block. I am going to share a few tips and tricks on how to deal with the barricade writers’ encounter instead of downing Tylenol®, reaching for the Puffs Plus® or banging their noggins on the wall.
At some point in their lives many writers will suffer from writer’s block. The causes for writer’s block run the gamut from apprehension to distress to life’s ebbs and flows to launching or concluding a project to page fright. It seems just about anything can cause that incapacitating sense of frustration and terror. Grrr!

Have no fear, cookie cakes, there are a sundry of ways to slay writer’s block, just remember to BREATHE! Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. Exhale.

Ready? Here we go!

  • Implement a writing schedule.
  • Slice out an interval to write and write. Do not skip your scheduled writing time even if nothing flows.
  • Just write. Editing comes later.
  • Set deadlines and keep them.
  • Work on more than one project at a time.
  • Take time off if you’ve just completed a project…and congratulate yourself. Congratulations to you!
  • Remember your writing is your livelihood, NOT your hobby.
  • Start thinking of your writing as a job, and not a whim.
  • Remember why you started to write in the first place.
