Nine Tips for Writing a Book

writing-tipsBelieve it or not, the tough part for most writers isn’t getting published. It’s the writing process itself. Many people claim to be writers, but few actually partake in the arduous, solitary, worthwhile activity. The ones who “claim” to be writers are fantasizing about the book tours, media junkets and legions of fans adoring them…oh, and let’s not forget bragging about seeing their name on a cover. Hey, whatever floats their canoe, right? Writers write. Dreamers dream. And authentic scribes know what it feels like to toil away at the keyboard or in a notebook for hours on end. We don’t just want to tell stories, we need to tell them. It’s in our DNA.

  1. Set aside a time to work on your book every day.
  2. Choose a designated spot to write.
  3. Think of your book in terms of beginning, middle, and end.
  4. Give yourself deadlines.
  5. Stay motivated.
  6. Set up specific days to do research.
  7. Keep in mind this will be challenging, so reward yourself frequently.
  8. Have a set word count.
  9. Find a writing group.
