Writing 101

Writing OUAT

  • Write what you are passionate about.
  • Write every day.
  • Write wherever you are.
  • When you stumble across a roadblock, remember to breath, relax, and rest. Take a break away from the keyboard or notepad and soak up the sun, relax in the rain, build a snowperson, go for a stroll, toss a Frisbee with the kids, and/or walk the dogs. Remember to take time for yourself and step away to recharge your batteries.
  • Designate a specific time and place to write.
  • Don’t be too quick to share what you’re writing on unless you have a trustworthy family member or friend that will offer constructive criticism and support you on your writing journey. A critique group is an invaluable tool to incorporate into your writing sphere.
  • When you complete your manuscript/screenplay, don’t rest on your rear; submit it to a literary agent, periodical or publishing company. Submitting your work will help you to cultivate your process.
  • Join as many writing associations as you can.
  • Familiarize yourself with your local writing community and network with other writers.
  • Attend classes, conferences and writing workshops to hone your craft.
  • Start on your next writing project.
